Transforming Surabaya’s Library Spaces: Strategies Inspired by Brisbane

Background of the study: Neighbourhood public libraries play a crucial role in supporting urban communities by providing spaces for reading, writing, social interaction, and creative activities. Both the Surabaya Municipality and Brisbane City Council (BCC) have adopted similar strategies in offering free public library services to enhance urban livability and educational accessibility for all age groups and abilities. While BCC Libraries offer a wide range of programs such as reading initiatives, book talks, and IT training, Surabaya’s library network consists of 1,449 service points, including two main public libraries and 533 micro-libraries. However, the accessibility of some micro-libraries remains a challenge, particularly for people with disabilities (PWD) and older individuals, necessitating urban replanning efforts.

Purpose: This study aims to assess the need for neighbourhood library relocation in Surabaya, taking inspiration from Brisbane City and other global examples. The research seeks to improve library accessibility and explore alternative strategies to address underserved areas.

Method: The study employed a combination of Google mapping techniques, land use analysis, and interviews with key stakeholders, including Surabaya’s library management and urban planning authorities. These methods were used to evaluate the feasibility of relocating libraries and identifying potential solutions for improved accessibility.

Findings: Preliminary results indicate that relocating existing libraries is not a viable option due to the limited availability of municipal assets that can be repurposed for accessible library spaces. However, the study suggests that collaboration with private and community-owned libraries could provide an effective alternative to serve areas with limited access to public libraries.

Conclusion: A new library facility has been proposed for the western area of Surabaya, integrating open space with an innovative semi-outdoor library concept. This design includes additional health mitigation measures to reduce the potential spread of COVID-19. If accepted by the Surabaya Municipality, this initiative could serve as a model for enhancing library accessibility while fostering community engagement.

The Role of Front Office Service Staff in Library Clearance Activities as an Effort to Support Sustainable Information Access at the Andalas University Library (UNAND)

Background of the study: UNAND Library as an academic information institution implements library clearance services as part of an integrated academic administration system. This service not only functions as an administrative procedure, but also has a broader impact on sustainable access to information. Sustainable information access makes it easy to obtain the information needed for sustainable development.

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the role of Front Office service staff in the Library Clearance process at the UNAND Library and their contribution to supporting sustainable information access for students.

Method: This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through observation, in-depth interviews with Front Office service staff, and surveys of students who have undergone library clearance process.

Findings: The results of the study indicate that Front Office staff have a major role in ensuring the smooth running of library clearance process through information services, administrative validation, and utilization of digital systems. The use of library automation systems has increased service efficiency, but there are still several obstacles such as limited digital literacy of students and technical obstacles in the information system.

Conclusion: The role of Front Office staff in library clearance activities greatly influences user experience and sustainable access to information.

From Libraries to AI: A Paradigm Shift in Search for References

Background of the study: The development of information technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI), has significantly changed the paradigm of searching for academic references. Students are now more likely to use AI-based tools that offer quick access and more relevant reading resource recommendations compared to traditional methods such as manual searches in libraries. For example, the use of ChatGPT to summarize literature, DeepSeek for AI-based academic search, and Elicit which helps to automatically generate literature reviews, are becoming increasingly popular among students and researchers. This shift is not only happening in the academic environment but also in the professional world, where AI is increasingly being adopted to support research and information processing. The ease offered by AI allows students to quickly access academic literature from a wide range of global sources, although this also poses risks to the validity and reliability of the information obtained.

Purpose: This study aims to explore a paradigm shift in the way students choose reading resources, with a focus on the role of AI in the process.

Method: This study uses the literature review method to analyze behavioral shifts in information search, as well as the advantages and challenges faced in the use of AI.

Findings: The results of the analysis show that AI is able to increase efficiency in searching for references, but also raises concerns about students' critical thinking skills in evaluating information. In addition, academic libraries face challenges in maintaining their relevance in the digital era

Conclusion: Therefore, the integration of AI and libraries is a potential solution to ensure quick access to quality information, while developing student information literacy.

Optimizing the Role of Islamic Higher Education Libraries in the Era of Technology 5.0

Background of the study: The rapid advancement of Technology 5.0 has had a significant impact on higher education, particularly in optimizing digital library services in Islamic universities. This research explores the role of digitization in improving information accessibility and social inclusion, focusing on the challenges and opportunities in implementing digital libraries.

Purpose: The main objective is to analyze key barriers such as infrastructure limitations, digital literacy gaps, and policy constraints and evaluate the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve user experience

Method: Using a literature review approach, data was collected through a review of selected literature

Findings: Findings show that AI-powered tools, including chatbots and recommendation systems, improve service efficiency and accessibility for disadvantaged groups, including people with disabilities and those from low-income backgrounds. In addition, digital transformation in libraries promotes academic engagement and lifelong learning.

Conclusion: The study concludes that strengthening digital infrastructure, implementing inclusive policies, and improving librarians' competencies in AI-based services are essential to optimize library functions. Collaboration between the government, universities and society is essential to ensure sustainable and adaptive digital transformation in Islamic higher education.

Transformation of Library Services within the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia in Community Service for the Welfare and Health of the Indonesian People

Background of the study: Indonesia faces various complex health challenges, ranging from the burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases, nutritional problems, environmental health issues, to public health literacy that still needs improvement. In facing these challenges, the role of libraries within the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia becomes highly vital and strategic.

Purpose: Analyzing how libraries within the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkes RI) currently conduct community service

Method: This research used a descriptive qualitative method with data collection through direct observation and interviews to gain a deep and contextual understanding of the phenomenon.

Findings: The BKPK Library engages in "BKPK Mengajar" (BKPK Teaches) activities, visits with PKK cadres, and storytelling for elementary school children. The Dr. Kariadi Hospital Library in Semarang offers a "Book Cart" service for inpatients. The Poltekkes Kendari Library established "Sikola Di Lao" (School in the Sea) for the coastal community of Soropia. The Poltekkes Kemenkes Semarang Library organizes training on making tofu dregs nuggets for the local community, while the Poltekkes Jakarta 3 Library provides a "Pustelling" (Mobile Electronic Library) service for its fostered communities. These library service transformations encompass aspects of digitalization and open access to health information resources, social inclusion and community service, an educational role and health information literacy, as well as collaboration and partnerships. By implementing these transformational service aspects, libraries within the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia are making a significant impact on community service for the welfare and health of the Indonesian people.

Conclusion: This research reveals that libraries within the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkes RI) play a significant role in supporting the institution's duties and functions in improving the health status of the Indonesian population. Through various activities such as promoting reading interest, community empowerment, mobile library services, and circulation services for patients, these libraries have transformed into active agents of change in community service. This transformation demonstrates effective adaptation to technological advancements and global challenges, further strengthening the libraries' contribution to improving the welfare and health of the Indonesian people in support of the SDGs.

Model of Environmental Information Literacy Strengthening Strategy Based on Community Reading Parks: Study on Mangrove Ecotourism Areas in Pangandaran Regency West Java Province

Background of the study: Tourism remains one of the key sectors for every country, including Indonesia. This is because tourism not only contributes to national foreign exchange earnings but also drives other productive sectors. One type of tourism currently being promoted is environmental tourism, commonly known as ecotourism. The specific type of ecotourism examined in this study is mangrove ecotourism.

Purpose: This research aims to develop a model for strengthening environmental literacy strategies based on community reading gardens. This process involves several stages, including analyzing the role of community reading gardens (TBM) in enhancing environmental literacy, identifying the needs and challenges of ecological literacy in society, and developing a strategy model to strengthen environmental information literacy.

Method: This study employs a mixed-methods approach with a sequential transformative design strategy. Data collection techniques include questionnaires, interviews, field observations, and document analysis.

Findings: The results of this research yield a model for enhancing environmental information literacy strategies through community reading gardens. The implementation of this strategy model is carried out in the ecotourism areas of Pangandaran Regency, including the Nusawiru mangrove ecotourism area, Babakan, and the Bojongsalawe ecotourism area, by establishing a “mangrove reading corner” in these three ecotourism locations.

Conclusion: Strengthening environmental information literacy through community reading parks or reading corners in mangrove ecotourism areas has a strategic role in increasing environmental awareness, supporting ecosystem conservation, and strengthening the educational value of ecotourism.

The Use of ChatGPT for Library System Innovation

Background of the study: Technology has advanced rapidly in recent years, including artificial intelligence (AI). AI can be used in various systems, including library information systems that facilitate users' use of library services. One AI that can be used is ChatGPT.

Purpose: This study aims to provide an overview of the use of ChatGPT for innovation in library information systems.

Method: This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach (literature review), collects data from various journals, and analyzes it using thematic methods to identify information themes.

Findings: The study results show that the application of ChatGPT in library information systems can improve service efficiency and ease of access for users. ChatGPT, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology, enables the automation of various library services, including information retrieval, collection management, and reference services, and improves the process of digitizing library collections. However, using ChatGPT in library systems requires proper technological infrastructure and readiness of human resources to manage AI-based systems.

Conclusion: Using ChatGPT in library information systems provides significant innovation in improving services and the efficiency of information management.

Research Trends of Public Library Service to Achieve SDG’s: A Bibliometric Analysis Utilizing The WOS Database

Background of the study: Public libraries are essential in advancing the SDG’s by enhancing services through the establishment of service standards based on 17 SDG indicators; nevertheless, there remains a deficiency in comprehensive literature reviews and bibliometric analyses

Purpose: To investigate research trends of public library services to achieve SDG’s.

Method: This study utilizes a bibliometric analytic approach that integrates qualitative and quantitative performance evaluations and scientific-intellectual and conceptual mapping frameworks. This research extracted 4,476 papers from the WOS database over the last 8 years (2016-2023)/until post-COVID with defining search keywords (defining "Library", "SDG’s", Library" and "Limited SDG’s" as initial search keys). The data extracting and processing used the bibliometrics method (biblioshiny software).

Findings: Public libraries are not among the dominant ones, and library standards do not appear in the bibliometric analysis results based on WordCloud by Title. Cooperation between countries in scientific studies of Libraries and SDG’s as of 2023 is still dominated by the USA. The close relations between countries collaborating, Australia is the largest country.

Conclusion: The discussion on scientific research concerning Libraries and SDG’s highlighted numerous themes pertinent to Academic Libraries and their Services. Research on academic library services is more prevalent than public library services, as the concept of services aligns more closely with academic libraries than public libraries. The subject of indicators for library standards has not been addressed whatsoever. Research on the development of SDG’s-based public library service standards still has a great opportunity to be appointed as a research topic, as a novelty for future research. Southeast Asian countries dominate countries that have not yet collaborated.

The Role of Reading Room Staff in Providing Continuous Information Access for Students of The Faculty of Pharmacy, Andalas University (UNAND)

Background of the study: Knowledge and access to quality scientific information are crucial aspects in supporting students' learning and research processes, especially in the Faculty of Pharmacy environment which is highly dependent on scientific data and reliable reference sources.

Purpose: This article aims to analyze the role of reading room staff in providing sustainable access to information for students of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Andalas University (UNAND).

Method: This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, where data is collected through observation, in-depth interviews with reading room staff, and students who use the service.

Findings: The results of the study show that reading room staff not only act as collection keepers, but also as active information facilitators in helping students find and use relevant information sources. This role is realized through various services such as literature lending and searching, information literacy training, and managing access to electronic journals and databases.

Conclusion: In conclusion, the presence of competent and proactive reading room staff plays an important role in supporting the achievement of students' academic goals through adaptive and sustainable information services

The Implementation of Financial Literacy on Procedure Text at MAN 1 Kota Tangerang Selatan

Background of the study: Improving the quality of education is not only oriented towards academics but also towards practical skills. One important aspect that needs to be taught to students is financial literacy through learning Procedure text material. The challenge in implementing this is the lack of teachers who master financial literacy material in teaching financial literacy and the lack of financial literacy library collections.

Purpose: This study aims to identify some challenges and opportunities in the application of financial literacy to Procedure text material.

Method: This study uses a qualitative approach. The source of research data is grade XI (eleventh) students. Data collection techniques are carried out through interviews, observations, questionnaires and the results of document analysis in the form of journals, articles, textbooks, and student presentation videos.

Findings: Information about financial literacy is obtained by the students from reading online articles (66.7%). They also visit the library to look for information about financial literacy (3.7%). 29.6% of students know financial literacy information from Procedure text material delivered by teachers. The results of the study based on the questionnaire showed that financial literacy material is very suitable to be taught in Procedure text material (97.3%).

Conclusion: This study found that the application of financial literacy to Procedure text material at MAN 1 Kota Tangerang Selatan has great potential in improving the quality of education. Madrasah library support can also be an effective strategy in improving the quality of education.

The Role of Taman Bacaan Rumah Kreatif Wadas Kelir in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals Point 4

Method: This research uses a descriptive qualitative research method, which involves data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation.

Findings: The results of this research show that TBM Rumah Kreatif Wadas Kelir has programs focused on education, including literacy schools for children and volunteers, early childhood education (PAUD), package B and C schools, as well as tutoring programs that support SDG’s point 4.

Conclusion: TBM Rumah Kreatif Wadas Kelir has four programs to support SDG’s Point 4. These programs target the local community, especially teenagers and children. However, the challenge faced is the low community response to these programs.

Purpose: This study aims to explore the philosophical and ethical foundations of knowledge and information management in Islam based on Surah Al-‘Alaq (1–5) and analyze their relevance to the values and responsibilities of the librarianship profession in the modern era.

Method: This research employs a qualitative content analysis approach with a thematic interpretation of classical and contemporary tafsir literature. It synthesizes Islamic epistemological perspectives with the principles of modern library and information science (LIS).

Findings: The study reveals that Surah Al-‘Alaq promotes core values such as literacy, divine guidance, teaching, and documentation, which align with fundamental aspects of librarianship—such as access to knowledge, preservation of information, intellectual integrity, and ethical service. These values contribute to a spiritually rooted framework for managing knowledge and information.

Conclusion: The integration of Islamic ethical foundations into librarianship offers a holistic paradigm that enriches the professional identity of Muslim librarians. It also opens a pathway for further Islamization of LIS education and practice, particularly in Muslim-majority societies.

Web-Based Library and Publisher Collaboration Model for The Acquisition of Student Books Donation

Background of the study: In situations where library development funding is limited, such as in the Tarbiyah Faculty library of UIN Raden Intan Lampung, support from the academic community is essential. One effective solution is the acquisition of books through student donations. Proper procedures and student trust are crucial for such programs to run smoothly.

Purpose: 1) Identify applicable collaboration models for donated book acquisition; 2) Analyze the benefits of such collaborations; and 3) identify potential challenges in implementation.

Method: This research is a qualitative research with a survey approach, Respondents consisted of 5 Library Staff, 10 students who had purchased grant books through the web application. Data collection techniques through interviews, observations, and documentation.

Findings: Indicate that donated book acquisition can be enhanced through partnerships with publishers and information technology. An online system enables students to purchase and donate books quickly, efficiently, and at any time, while also supporting organized documentation and administration of the donated materials.

Conclusion: A digital collaboration model between libraries and publishers has strong potential to improve the availability of quality books, thereby supporting the advancement of higher education curricula in Indonesia.
